Learning is Meant to be Fun

Learning, remembering, and understanding are all things that we believe are effectively reinforced by not only mental, but physical activity. At Foghorn, campers learn a lot. They learn about ocean tides, gyres, marinership, environmental stewardship, and more. But they are not learning through packets or lectures. When we tell stories about the ocean and its tides, we then go to the shore to identify the tide levels. When we learn about the kinds of rocks (like quartz, obsidian, and slate), we then go find each rock by sifting through the sand. They remember their lessons not because it was repeated by flashcards or recitation. They remember because they see each and every lesson with their own eyes –– right when they turn around and see the beach.
